The War for Talent: A Civil and Military Perspective
CIPD Scotland’s Knowledge into Practice(KIP) Network debated the ‘War for Talent’ at the Army Personnel Centre Glasgow on 13 September. Professor Dora Scholarios and Dr Calvin Burns from the Wellbeing & Occupational Risk (WORk) Psychology Network at the University of Strathclyde’s Business School gave us their ‘Knowledge’ on well being and the retention of talent before we gained an insight from the ‘Practitioners’. The Military Secretary, Major General Nick Ashmore CBE, gave us the military perspective and highlighted how the military is seeking to maximise its talent; he was followed by Lesley Uren from PA Consulting who explained how fluid the talent management of the future has to be, relying on ‘big data’ and fulfilling the demands for portfolio careers. Finally, we heard from Ed Houghton from CIPD’s ‘Valuing Your Talent’ programme, which further reinforced the need to understand the metrics behind talent management.
